You get the usual story - COVID has a massive impact on the over 65s in spring 2020, mops up in autumn, vax-induced or exacerbated winter wave. So many succumbed in 2020 that 2021 is a much more hardy bunch and the ASMR is inevitably lower.
But then…
Despite having a substantial COVID spike in 2020, 15 to 64 year-old women have more or less the same level of excess death in 2021.
Spanish men already appear to die at twice the rate as the women in this age group which is weird? Spring 2020 COVID is no different but the men also seem to succumb at an even greater rate still in autumn. In the post-vax summer of 2021 and ever since, relative to expectations, I’d say the men are now dying at a lower rate? I defer to my Spanish readers to help make sense of this?
As a Spaniard, I would say that our data are wrong. Honestly, we are a disaster.
I attempted an explanation, then realised it was pure conjecture, so I'm editing it to say: as a Spaniard (albeit one who lives in the UK), I don't know.
