He was an avowed anticommunist and did what he did to elements within the population in order to save his country from the embedded hard core communists that the previous regime leader Allende allowed inside Chile. Yes, he cleaned the house with retribution. Hard core communists have a hard time reforming which is why Pinochet did what the world would classify him as "a ruthless dictator". Leftists are relentless as we have seen throughout covid and do not easily give up power (which is why the west is in big trouble). Pinochet brought tremendous commercial stability to Chile for many years. The media portrays Pinochet as a ruthless dictator because as you know, the media is biased by a leftist worldview who either dismiss hard core communism as a phantom or as a better alternative to "corrupt" capitalism.
Like your comparison with the death totals under the dictatorship... you'd think there would be outrage...
