SARS-CoV-2 spike protein causes direct injuries, but not sure it explains the the non-Gompertz-curve behavior following masking/lockdowns/etc. But a good idea to check -- if we look at infection curves at places that did not use these interventions, do they show normal Gompertz behavior?
It's possible that spike shed from covid infections lowers immunity, but that seem much less likely than the fear-porn stress effect (stress caused almost 2x increased infection rate in the linked study).
Don't we know that "social distancing" and masking is good for nothing? Correction: masking makes you sick. All in itself. Without stress. By making you breathe your own germs, by culturing and amplifying them in your respiratory system, by increasing the levels of CO2 in your system (acidifying you). Stress on top? Maybe, if you live in San Diego and have no other worries. But the aforementioned factors ought to be orders of magnitude more directly bearing on the issue.
As you say, there are lots of problems with masks. The effects you mention are all physiologic stressors and lower immune function, increase illness rates.
There are also studies showing social distancing does nothing -- as does Joel Smalley's analysis here, showing negative effects.

I have not been attacking your point, rather being sarcastic about the measures. You know how they came up with 6ft apart number? Pulled it out of their "ears". They just needed rituals for hypochondriacs to cling to, in order to build up mass psychosis going on mass formation. It worked in Nazi Germany beautifully, it works miracles in Canada, Old Europe and the blue states. Human nature mostly. It doesn't work so well on those that built up resistance to such BS, like libertarians, conservatives, post-communist states, post-slavery and post-totalitarianism survivors. Which learned how to spot it and fight it. But in the West too many useful idiots abound. Now they are being weeded out, by their own (in)decisions. I have noticed and commented on the routine ridiculous projections of Neil Ferguson for a long time now. His answer to Hoof and Mouth? Kill tonnes of cattle because the alternative is tonnes more dead. Mad cow? Kill tonnes of cattle because the alternative is tonnes more dead. Human cough? Kill....economies. It seems to follow a pattern. Word on the street is that the reason review and update of his "models" of respiratory spread never took place is because they never *could* take place. His methods were a midden heap of a bazillion lines of badly (badly) hacked together spaghetti code that had been produced by amateur grad students who had departed a decade earlier and commented 0.00% of it. "It," his Black Box, had started behaving non-deterministically and spit out different projections when no params had changed. Huh? When asked to share his methods, he stalled, and stalled, apparently torn between the embarrassment of being caught out with such lousy juvenile code that made law for the planet, and the potential that reality would eventually come to within an order of magnitude of his numbers, at which point he could declare victory (in his mind). I don't believe very many people could be as wrong as Ferguson and maintain a career unless very special people with very special interests need somebody like him around. The only good news is that at one point, his usefulness will have expired. Pray he doesn't turn his attention to "climate science" before then.

The diagnostic descriptions also changed through 2020. Using PCR gives considerable false positives, would your analysis change substantially if the "cases" were as inflated as I believe they were? How would the functions agree if you used deaths as the variable, with the same proviso?
Deaths produces the same insights but I didn't want the potential confounder of better treatments (even though it took best part of 9 months before they were finally allowed to start using some instead of Remdesivir.

I don't think so. During most of this period, people were dutifully confining themselves to their homes and wearing their masks when permitted to go out. This is evident in the data. Any notion of relaxed behaviour, especially in spring, is a falsehood. And there is no evidence of this vis-a-vis the vaccine either. It just doesn't work, that's all.

I recall the sick feeling I had after sending it. I was as sure as I could be that our alarm call was fully justified. But I knew our adversaries were very powerful & I had no idea what would happen in response.
