The entire New Zealand mortality story in one chart
Flu causes excess death. Flu disappears, excess death disappears. COVID doesn't produce any excess death. The COVID vaccine causes more death than a typical flu.
In New Zealand in 2018 there were 28,331 deaths between 1st Mar and 31st Dec. Unless you are completely devoid of visual and mental acuity, the relationship between flu surveillance and deaths is pretty obvious.
In 2019, there were slightly more deaths over the same period at 29,404 even though flu surveillance was slightly lower. Perhaps a more virulent strain or a larger susceptible population?
In 2020, there were only 27,730 deaths. Looks like those draconian COVID measures obliterated flu as well as it is virtually non-existent. Curiously, what little COVID deaths there are do not seem to coincide with spikes in overall mortality. Looks to me like these were all “with” COVID deaths where COVID didn’t even contribute to the death.
In 2021, flu is possibly lower still than 2020 and yet deaths for the season are the highest over the four years at 29,724. I have plotted COVID vaccinations for reference. New Zealand does not report a time series of vaccinations by age so I admit to having “modelled” the data from 29th Aug which is 11 days after the 12 to 15 year olds became eligible. Fortunately they do not die in the same magnitude as the older cohorts so they are unlikely to impact the mortality analysis.
Given:
the virtual absence of flu in 2021;
the non-existence of COVID in 2021;
the highest death tally in 2021 since 2018;
the temporal correlation with the vaccine rollout for adults;
I’d suggest that it’s pretty conclusive that, at the very least, the vaccine should be investigated as the potential cause of all the excess death in 2021.

The Draconian measures basically stopped Covid at the border and we enjoyed large amounts of freedom compared to the rest of the world for the second half of 2020 and much of 2021, with the exception of a couple of extra lockdowns for Auckland, our largest city. Our death total from Covid is still only 65 in a population of 5 million, and most of those were in the first outbreak in March-April 2020.
Flu levels were reduced in 2020- turns out isolation and quarantine is also effective against influenza. This was discussed at the time and I also believe the quarantining had a major part to play, people just didn’t get as sick as previous years. However in 2021 we had a worse season for other respiratory viruses, including RSV which killed a number of babies.
The vaccine has definitely had an impact on our mortality, and there are large numbers of adverse effects, however another significant cause, which is hard to quantify, is suicide. Many people know there has been an increase in suicide since early 2020, however the government has stopped releasing the data and has recently reclassified some suicides as accidental deaths to try and minimise the numbers. But for those in the mental health industry, or the police who attend them it appears the numbers are significant.
